Privacy policy.

A personal journal deserves a clear explanation of what happens to its information.

About this policy

Quickening is a movement journal for iPhone and Apple Watch, provided by Kaolin Limited (“Kaolin”, “we”, “us”). This policy describes Quickening’s on-device journal, optional purchases, advertising where enabled, and how information is handled when you contact us. The advertising section below applies to ad-enabled builds. Designated internal tests use Google sample ads.

You do not need a Kaolin account to use Quickening. We do not operate a separate server that receives your movement journal. We do not send your name, due date, movement records, notes or journal PDFs to Google or other advertising partners, and we do not use that information to target ads. We have not added a separate analytics or crash-reporting service; the advertising services described below have their own technical measurement and diagnostics.

Information the app uses

Quickening stores information you create or choose to provide so it can display your journal, show your personal history and provide reminders:

  • Movement records: a record identifier, the date and start time, recorded duration, movement total, counting method, device used, optional notes, and flags such as whether the session was interrupted, reached its target or time limit, was excluded from your history, or felt different.
  • Optional profile information: your name and due date, if you enter them.
  • Preferences: your reminder time, language, scene, Watch setting, onboarding choices and whether you have paused or finished recording. The app also keeps the last count time to manage reminders.

Individual tap timestamps are used during a live session and may be sent to your paired device. They are not retained as individual timestamps in the saved count record.

Where it goes

On your devices. Count records are saved on the device where you start the session. iPhone and Watch histories are separate. Your optional name, due date and pregnancy-related settings are also stored on the device. The app requests that its health files be excluded from device backups; this does not remove earlier backups or copies you have already shared. Quickening does not ask for access to your contacts, location, photos, microphone, camera or HealthKit data.

Apple services. This version does not use iCloud to synchronise your journal. Your paired iPhone and Watch use Apple’s WatchConnectivity to exchange live session events and the Watch setting while they can reach each other. This live connection does not merge their saved histories. Apple handles its services under its own privacy policy.

Reminders. If you allow notifications, the app schedules reminders locally on your device. You can change notification permission in your device settings.

Exports you choose. When you request an export, Quickening prepares a fresh temporary PDF on your device. It contains recent non-excluded counts, a usual range where available and any “felt different” flags. Temporary export files are cleared when sharing ends and when you delete the app’s data on that device. You choose whether and where to share it using the system share sheet. The recipient or service you choose then controls its copy under its own practices.

Advertising and your privacy choices

Where ads can appear. In the free iPhone/iPad app, an occasional full-screen ad may appear after you save a session or confirm that you want to discard it. There is one opportunity every third ended session, with no more than one displayed ad in any 24-hour period. Ads do not interrupt counting, unsaved results or History, and do not appear on Apple Watch. Unavailable ads are skipped; saving or discarding never depends on an ad loading. Designated internal tests use Google’s sample ads.

Technical information. Google AdMob and its User Messaging Platform process information such as your IP address (which can indicate approximate location), app or device identifiers, ad views and interactions, consent choices, and performance or diagnostic information. This supports ad delivery, fraud prevention, consent management and measurement. Your journal content is not supplied to these services. See Google’s privacy policy and how Google uses information from apps that use its services, including information about international processing and retention.

Our settings. We request non-personalized ads and restricted data processing, disable publisher first-party ID, and do not request permission to access Apple’s advertising identifier. Non-personalized ads still involve technical data processing; they do not mean that no data is collected. We do not provide advertising keywords, a user account identifier or pregnancy information to the ad service.

Your choices. Where required, Google’s consent message lets you accept, refuse or manage the relevant choices. You can revisit the message through Settings → Ad privacy choices when that option is available. Refusing consent does not prevent you from counting, saving or viewing your journal. Depending on your choice and region, ads may be limited or absent. A change to your choices affects future processing; it does not automatically erase information already held by Google. For questions or requests, contact us or use the controls described in Google’s privacy policy.

Local frequency controls. Quickening stores a counter of locally saved or explicitly discarded sessions and the time an ad was last shown on the device to limit interruptions. These values and the underlying movement records are not sent to Google as experiment data. We have not added a separate service to track advertising experiments.

Optional purchases

Rose pond is an optional one-time purchase. It unlocks the scene and removes ads throughout Quickening, including when you choose a free scene. There is no subscription. Apple handles payment; we use verified StoreKit purchase information to check and restore access. Kaolin does not receive your payment-card details.

Restore purchases using the Apple Account used for the purchase. Deleting journal data does not cancel a purchase, erase Apple’s transaction history or erase information already processed by advertising services. Apple handles purchase records and refund requests under its own terms and privacy policy.

Keeping and removing information

Saved count records have no automatic expiry. Pausing reminders or finishing your recording journey does not erase those records.

Removing a count from Rhythm excludes it from the visible history, comparisons and newly generated exports. Copies you have already exported or shared are not updated automatically. The underlying record is retained; this is not permanent deletion.

On iPhone: open Settings → Pause or finish → Delete data on this device. This removes saved counts, your optional name and due date, pregnancy-related settings and temporary exports on that device, and turns reminders off. Non-health preferences, such as language, scene and the Watch toggle, are kept. Your pregnancy profile and counting-style choices are reset. If deletion cannot finish, the app reports an error rather than confirming success.

On Apple Watch: use Delete data on this device on the Watch’s start screen to remove its local records and pregnancy settings. Deleting on your iPhone does not delete the Watch’s saved history, and deleting on your Watch does not delete the iPhone’s history.

Copies you previously exported or shared, and earlier backups, are separate. Remove saved exports from their destination and manage earlier device backups through your Apple settings. The app does not automatically erase these copies.

We cannot retrieve or delete a journal from a Kaolin account because there is no such account or journal server. Contact us if you need help understanding the available controls.

When you contact us

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include, such as your name, a description of the problem or a screenshot. Please do not send movement records or other sensitive information unless it is needed for your request.

We retain correspondence for as long as needed to handle the request and necessary follow-up, or as required by law. You can contact us to request access, correction or deletion of information you have sent us; any applicable legal retention requirement may limit deletion.

When you visit this website, our hosting provider receives the technical information needed to serve and protect it, such as your IP address, browser information and requested pages. We have not added advertising trackers or visitor analytics to these pages.
